Johnny Cash And Me
It started many years ago, when I was just a kid
The guys in school, they couldn’t understand just what I did
In our car, from a tape player that we had under the dash
It hit me like a hammer, I got struck by Johnny Cash
I didn’t know it then, but my life would forever change
The kids my age would tell me that this music sounded strange
I couldn’t understand a word, but that sound fit me to a t
So it started, that connection between Johnny Cash and me
I didn’t play an instrument, I never got that far
But that sound became a part of me, so I bought my first guitar
I studied Bob and Luther, but there was no degree
But I guess it shows there is a match between Johnny Cash and me
I found some guys to pick with, so I started my first band
We played whereever we could play, all across this land
A Telecaster, Twin Reverb, and songs by Mr. C
All based on the connection between Johnny Cash and me
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the kind to immitate John R.
But my fascination runs real deep for that worldwide music star
I’m not that kinda man he was, and I will never be
But somehow, we’re connected, Johnny Cash and me
So, here I am today, I’m playing both his songs, and mine
And while temptation’s strong, I could avoid that special rhyme
No need to quote the man, I use my own words, as you see
And yet, there’s this connection between Johnny Cash and me
So, you can call me what you want, I know just who I am
From stage to stage, from town to town, and all across the land
I sing those songs I wrote about the man for all to see
Yeah, that’s why people tend to connect Johnny Cash and me
And I’m proud to say that people connect Johnny Cash and me
